Magical Ladies of the Lost Isle still inspire today's women

Available online in all ebook formats and paperback.

Myths and legends are often cautionary tales, but each of them relates to specific events and periods of the faraway past, and contains a kernel of truth. Even these immortal ladies were modeled on existing heroines of old, who influenced society in times of turmoil.
Beside the persecution of Pagans during the dark ages, many important historical events punctuate the lives of these immortal ladies. The Viking invasions in Scotland are front and center in books one and two. Then the foundation of Luxembourg in books three and four. Feudal life and religious struggles in France come to life in book five. The greatest adventure of all times, the Crusades with their different facets are depicted in books six and seven, and the best known legend of Melusine the Fae in Aquitaine, the cradle of many royal lines, comes to light in book eight.

But who were these strong women who fought to survive against all odds, in a world ruled by men, in a violent society where life had little value?

They were Celtic and Pagan. They did not abide by the rules of the new religion Charlemagne had imposed by the sword. They believed in equality and refused to bow to the will of the men who would tame and control them. They practiced kindness toward all and worked for the common good. Early on, they symbolized hope and freedom for many, especially the oppressed.
The ruins of the castles they built still stand. Here, Melusine's tower in Vouvant, Aquitaine.
These ladies were smart and astute politicians and influenced the rulers and the historical events of their day. They had the welfare of their community at heart. They fought for what was right in a world where the powerful held sway with ruthless violence, and often with impunity.

These ladies were not perfect. Far from it. Each of them made grave mistakes in their youth, using their powers for purposes other than the common good. For these mistakes, they were cursed, and spent their entire lives dealing with horrible woes... all the time struggling to hide their Pagan origins and avoid discovery by the Church... which would lead to burning at the stake. They also sought redemption in the eyes of their Pagan Goddess.
Melusine in her cursed shape still graces the walls of the castle of Lusignan
Even in today's society, these ladies of old stand as a shining example. I loved writing about them. Their names are rarely mentioned in the history books, although they appear in many legends. But their famous and infamous descendants blazed new trails throughout history.

I hope when you learn more about them, you will like them as much as I do.

Afflicted by the ondine curse, Melusine seeks the soul of her lost beloved in the young Artaud of Forez, who reigns over the verdant hills south of Burgundy, on the road of pilgrims, troubadours and merchants. The gold in the rivers instills greed in the powerful, and many envy the rich Lord of Forez, including his most trusted vassals... even the Bishop of Lyon. THE END! I finished Book 5 in the Curse of the Lost Isle series

Yep, I wrote THE END on the last page of the manuscript of CHATELAINE OF FOREZ, Book Five in the CURSE OF THE LOST ISLE series.

I'm going to polish it to a shine during the holidays, and send it to the publisher as soon as they reopen in January. Publication date will depend upon how long it takes the editors (some of them in England), and BWL's talented cover artists, to put it together. I predict it will probably be in late February or early March.

Anyhoo... I'm very excited and celebrating right now. Although this is my... let me count... Twenty-third title (I had to go to Amazon to check how many I had already published), the thrill of finishing a book never gets old.

CHATELAINE OF FOREZ follows Melusine (after Lady of Luxembourg) on a new adventure (still based upon the authentic legends, this time in the independent province of Forez (France), where I had a great time researching the local archives a few years ago.

Here is the short blurb:

Still afflicted by the ondine curse, Melusine seeks the reincarnated soul of her lost beloved in the young Artaud of Forez, who reigns over the verdant hills south of Burgundy, on the road of pilgrims, troubadours and merchants. But this dark and brooding Pagan lord is not at all what she hoped. He knows nothing of their past love, her Fae nature, or her secret curse. Must Melusine seduce and betroth this cold stranger to satisfy the Goddess and redeem her curse?

The gold in the rivers instills greed in the powerful, and many envy the rich Lord of Forez, including his most trusted vassals... even the Archbishop of Lyon. When a mythological creature is sighted in the swamps, initiating a holy hunt, will Melusine find redemption from the curse, or will she and Artaud burn at the stake?

There is also a box set including the first three novels (best deal)

Researching Medieval Times in pictures - by Vijaya Schartz

Castle in Forez
The Curse of the Lost Isle is an ongoing series that will include many installments.

I am currently writing Book 5 - CHATELAINE OF FOREZ, to come out this winter, but as I research small details, I come across fodder for my future novels in the series.

This book will again feature Melusine the Fae, a princess of Strathclyde, former lady of Luxembourg, but a few decades have passed.

The Curse of the Lost Isle series
4 books published so far - in kindle only

Arms of Forez
This is the banner of Forez, and the golden dolphin represents Melusine the Fae, a water creature. As many of you know, Melusine is immortal, but cursed to become a water serpent from the waist down one day each month. At the start of the 11th Century, she roams the swamps, lakes, springs, and rivers of Forez, where she meets Count Artaud, a Pagan knight, who might be the reincarnation of Melusine's very first love, Sigefroi of Luxembourg.

During research, I'm often distracted by facts and images that pop up in my searches. I'm very visual, so images bring up a slew of ideas.

Book 6 will cover the first Crusade, and it became difficult to remain focused on the book I'm presently writing, so I decided to stash away pictures and information for the future books in the series. Here are some of my precious finds I stashed on Pinterest for my next novel.

Godfrey of Bouillon 1st Crusader
Godfrey of Bouillon (in Belgium) will be a character in Book 6. He initiated the first knights' Crusade, which will serve as the backdrop for that novel.

But right now, I have to get back to writing Book 5, CHATELAINE OF FOREZ, so you can enjoy it during the holidays.

Wishing you all HAPPY READING.

The joys of writing the medieval series - by Vijaya Schartz

Find all these at all eBook retailers. There is also a special edition comprising the first three books in one download  for a bargain price

Well, after the release of LADY OF LUXEMBOURG, Book 4 of the CURSE OF THE LOST ISLE series, I'm now tackling book 5. It will be titled CHATELAINE OF FOREZ unless this working title doesn't stick. It happens sometimes. You write the book, then you think of a better title.

Chatelaine of FOREZ follows Melusine to this not so well known region of France, from the two branches of the river Loire to the source of the River Rhone. South of Burgundy and north of Provence, a land of green hills and mountains, a land of rivers and lakes, a land rich in iron and gold. So rich in fact, that the Romans used its gold to finance their many conquests.

Ancient legends are attached to this land. Little is known of early medieval times there. All I have to go on is a legend, folk tales, obscure genealogies, and the ruins of many castles built, according to legend, by Melusine the Fae. My hero is the first Count of Forez and Lyon, Arthaud, and his enemy is Archbishop Boniface of Lyon.

The bishops of the time were princes of the Church, nobles of high birth not lucky enough to be the first born, so they did not inherit their fathers' lands. Instead, their rich families purchased for them seats of power in the Church. So most of these bishops weren't even religious. They craved power and riches... and lands. They raised armies, and took advantage of the unstable political climate of feudal society to gain by the sword what they did not inherit by birth order.

I will not tell you much about the story, as it still evolves in my mind as I write. I'll tell you more about it as it takes shape. CHATELAINE OF FOREZ is scheduled for release in December 2013.

I hope you are enjoying reading this series as much as I enjoy writing it. It has been a long time in the making, I have been researching it for many years and still do research as I write it.

There will be more novels in this series. The next one, scheduled for 2014, will feature Melusine's sister Palatina, and her adventure as she goes on to he First Crusade. Then will come the story of Meliora, the guardian of a sacred castle on Mount Ararat during the Crusades, and forever forbidden to love.

HAPPY READING!
